National Apprenticeship Week - 3 months on the job with Ramisha and Joe

Posted on 07/03/17  |  Posted in Case Studies

The 10th National Apprenticeship Week (NAW 2017) will bring together employers and apprentices from across England to celebrate the success of apprenticeships over the last decade and will seek to encourage even more people to choose apprenticeships as a fast-track to a great career.

We wanted to offer an insight into the life of an apprentice, the reasons for choosing an apprenticeship and to share some experiences from one of Protocol's apprentices.

Ramisha works as an On-site Recruitment Administrator at South and City College Birmingham. Looking back over her first three months, here is what Ramisha had to say:

Name: Ramisha Haven

Job title: On-site Recruitment Administrator

What are you doing at the moment?

I am currently the On-site Recruitment Administrator at South and City College Birmingham.

Did you get any hands-on experience before the apprenticeship?

I have worked prior to the apprenticeship at two different places. My job role at my first ever job was a Recruitment Consultant and my job role at my last place was an Administrative Assistant.

Why did you choose the apprenticeship route?

The reason I chose the apprenticeship route is because I felt experience was very important and also the fact I would be gaining a qualification. It was good to know that I would be getting paid to work and to gain another qualification!

What would you say are the main benefits of an apprenticeship?

The main benefits of an apprenticeship is that we are able to build our experience in the working world and in the career route we choose to go into. I feel apprenticeships encourage confidence in people to work and it is hands on training meaning we will pick up skills a lot better and become more confident in the work are doing.

What would you say you’ve enjoyed the most?

I have enjoyed being part of such a good company who made me feel welcome since the first day I started. I enjoy my job role and all the skills I have picked up from working at Protocol.

What do you hope to do in the future?

I hope to become a recruitment consultant in the near future.

Why should other people choose the apprenticeship route?

They should choose the apprenticeship route as the experience you gain is really good, an apprenticeship also allows you to develop further in your career and pick up valuable skills.

Thanks, Ramisha. Well done and best of luck for the future!

Joe works within our Compliance team at Head Office and is learning to be a Compliance and Database Officer - a very important job here at Protocol!

Name: Joseph Stevenson

Job Title: Apprentice Compliance and Database Office

Which subjects did you study at school?

English, Maths, Science, I.T., P.E., History, French, and Art & Design.

Did you get any hands-on experience before the apprenticeship?

Only in the customer service aspect and a small amount of admin.

Why did you choose the apprenticeship route?

It’ll give me a valuable qualification and the fact that I’d be “earning while learning” is fantastic, because I’ve got bills.

What would you say are the main benefits of an apprenticeship?

As I say, a big plus is the “earning while learning”, and the support and guidance you receive whilst working is very reassuring. Also, it gives people the opportunity to break into their desired industry when they have limited or no experience or qualifications they would usually need.

What sparked your interested in your apprenticeship?

I enjoy organisation and striving towards and achieving daily goals, which is the heart of administration. I also enjoy learning about the work of FE and the compliance side of it.

What would you say you’ve enjoyed the most?

I have really enjoyed learning new things every day and the feeling of getting the job done right. Specifically, working with candidates to get them compliant and offering guidance where necessary. The sense of community is also very rewarding.

What will you be doing next?

I hope to constantly improve and perfect my performance, and see if I can tackle higher courses within the sector once I have completed my current one.

What do you hope to do in the future?

In the future, I would like to know my job inside and out and possibly further myself in any way possible.

Why should other people choose the apprenticeship route?

Getting experience is massively valuable and the fact that you can get this whilst learning about your desired profession is fantastic. An apprenticeship gives you a sense of pride and purpose, and will only ever serve you positively.

Thanks Joe! Well done so far - and good luck for the future!
